Set Events Guide

Prerelease

Prerelease is the official kickoff celebration for a new set! It’s a casual, fun event where everyone plays with the new cards for the very first time.

  • The Kit: You receive a Prerelease Pack containing 6 boosters and a stamped promo card.

  • The Deck: Build a 40-card deck using only the cards from your kit (plus basic lands).

  • The Experience: Since the cards are brand new to everyone, it’s a level playing field focused on discovery and learning rather than intense competition.

Commander Box League

Build and play a Commander deck using only the contents of one Play Booster Box.

  • Build: Create a 60-card deck from your box. You can swap cards between matches.

  • No Color Limits: Use any cards you want! You are not restricted by your Commander’s color identity.

  • Duplicates Allowed: You may play multiple copies of the same card if you opened them.

  • Standard Gameplay: Normal rules apply (40 life, Commander damage).

  • Note: Buy-a-Box and Commander promos cannot be used in your deck.

Friday Night Magic Drafts

Drafting is a “Limited” format where everyone starts on equal footing by building a deck on the spot from new packs.

How to Draft

  1. Pick: Open a pack, pick one card for your deck, and pass the rest to the player next to you.

  2. Repeat: Keep picking and passing until all cards are gone.

  3. Rotate: * Pack 1: Pass to your left.

    • Pack 2: Pass to your right.

    • Pack 3: Pass to your left.

  4. Build: Use your drafted cards (plus basic lands provided by the store) to build a 40-card deck.

The Benefit: You don’t need to own a deck to play, and you keep every card you draft!

Magic Academy

Magic Academy is the ultimate “welcome mat” for new players. It is a guided, hands-on experience held at your local game store.

  • Learn the Basics: Get a step-by-step walkthrough of how to play the game.

  • Deck Building: Learn the fundamentals of how to choose cards and construct your first deck.

  • Community: Meet other beginners and local experts in a friendly, low-pressure environment.

It’s the fastest and easiest way to start your Magic journey!

2HG Commander Night

Team up with a partner for a social, cooperative Commander experience!

  • The Team: You and a partner play as a single unit with a shared 60-point life total.

  • The Decks: Each player uses their own 100-card Commander deck.

  • How it Works: You take your turn simultaneously with your teammate, coordinating attacks and sharing information to defeat the opposing duo.

  • The Perks: It’s the perfect “buddy system” for new players to learn alongside a friend—plus, every participant earns a promo card!

Commander Pary

Commander Party is a fun, casual event that brings the world of the latest set to life through a unique, story-driven game.

  • The Vibe: A low-pressure, immersive experience perfect for new players and lore fans.

  • Special Rules: Each table uses a Play Aid and Party Cards that add set-specific powers and thematic twists to your normal game.

  • How it Works: As you play in pods of 3–4, the story unfolds, and your choices can impact the board in unexpected ways.

It’s the best way to experience the flavor of the new set while playing the Commander you already love!

Standard Showdown

Standard Showdown is a weekly event focused on Magic’s most popular “constructed” format, featuring cards from the most recent sets.

  • The Format: Build a 60-card deck using your own collection from the last few years of releases.

  • Why Play: The pool of legal cards rotates, meaning the strategies are constantly evolving and the gameplay stays fresh.

  • The Competition: It’s a great way to test your deck-building skills and compete for exclusive promo cards in a structured environment.

Store Championship

The Store Championship is a premier, competitive Standard tournament where players face off to prove their skills and earn exclusive prizes.

  • The Format: Standard (60-card decks from recent sets). Deck lists are required on the day of the event.

  • The Stakes: Compete for prestigious, commemorative promo cards and community recognition.

  • The Structure: Played using the Swiss pairing system (you play every round against someone with a similar record) under Regular rules enforcement.

  • Limited Space: Capped at 20 participants. Participation promos are awarded based on registration order, so sign up early!

Q.) What’s a pre-release? 

A.) A casual MTG event where you build and play with cards from your event kit containing extra goodies and booster packs from the set. See more info on pre-releases here.

 

Q.) Why is it called a “pre-release” if LUG can sell items starting the day pre-release events are held?

A.) It’s called a pre-release as Wizards of the Coast has local game store programs which allow us to sell items BEFORE the global release date of MTG sets.

 

Q.) When will my orders be available for pickup in-store or arrive through shipping?

A.) Online orders will begin shipping on April 4th. In-store orders may be picked up on April 4th.

What to expect from MTG: Foundations

MTG: Foundations, set for release in November, is designed to serve as a common base for new and returning magic players to build their collections.

If you’re thinking about building your first deck, or you recently got into the hobby during Bloomburrow and Duskmourn’s release, the cards and products in Foundations have been carefully curated to be excellent tools to expand on those first few packs or commander decks you picked up.

What exactly does that mean?

This means that card types and colors will be presented in clear and distinct ways. Some MTG sets will bend, break, or experiment with players’ expectations so that certain themes or new game mechanics can excite players.

The MTG colors you either already know and love or are coming to know will operate in a very ” first-principles” way. These colors are Blue, Red, Green, Black, and White. Most cards fall under one or more color identities and act accordingly. MTG: Foundations is the perfect set to crack open a few packs and discover how these colors interact in a game, what they typically do, and what players they are trying to appeal to.

For example, expect Green identity cards in Foundations to do the things Green is famous for: BIG monsters, making extra mana – also known as “ramping”- to be able to play those monsters, and powering up their creatures’ stats.

That isn’t to say there won’t be complex and exciting strategies in Foundations—far from it—but these strategies and game pieces will lend themselves to the deep DNA that makes the game’s color ecosystem tick.

No matter which of our locations you are shopping from: Duluth, John’s Creek, Athens, or Dawsonville, know that you have the support of each and everyone of them at your fingertips!

If you can’t find something in one of our stores while you’re shopping, you can always ask our staff members to see if we have it at our other locations.

With four game stores worth of items, we probably have you covered! Our locations can pull from each other’s inventory and get you that item you need quickly. Transfers are taken between our stores Thursday nights – Friday afternoons.

Once your item arrives, you will get a call from store staff.

Orders and Holds

If you are on the hunt for a specific item, you are always welcome to ask if any location have it in stock on our social media platforms like our Discord or call (numbers are in the top right of this webpage).

In our Discord, we have a specific “product requests and arrivals” channel where you can directly message store staff about items. Use @LevelUp(whatever store you are messaging) in your message to ping them!

If the store has the item, they will hold it up to 7 days for your arrival, or longer with a deposit made in store.

And if that location doesn’t have your item, we can transfer a copy or order one in for you. You’ll get a ring when it’s ready for pickup!

Ridin’ Checklist for Your Outlaws of Thunder Junction Prerelease

With the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Prerelease Events right around the corner, we thought it mighty right to cover some essentials for your prerelease events. So here is a short guide to pulling off the biggest heist! 

But first, what is a prerelease, and what do you do? At a prerelease event you are given a kit that contains 6 packs of Outlaws of Thunder Junction, and a promo card. You can use the cards in your kit to build your best 40 card deck. You will then play 3 rounds of Magic with your new limited deck. Each round is a best of three and you are free to add or change your deck using only the cards from your prerelease kit.

 So now knowing what a prerelease is and how it works, but how can you make it better?

Step 1

Step 1 is making sure that you are registered for the event. We have three different locations all running these events the weekend of April 12th. Make sure you sign up for the correct day, time, and store. Click on the store location below for the Outlaws of Thunder Junction prerelease registration of your choice.

Step 2

Step 2  is having the right tools for the job. We like to recommend having a fresh pack of sleeves on hand to sleeve up your deck. Sleeves like the Double Sleeving Pack from Gamegenic. Sleeves make shuffling cards a dream, as well as help protect em’ from harm.

We also recommend having a deck box that is big enough to store your deck and the extra cards from your prerelease kit. There are plenty o’ options to choose from when it comes to boxes. The Bastion or Squire from Gamegenic are great options.

Finally, we recommend a way to take notes and keep life totals. There are a few accessories you can pick up like LifeLink life counter made by Die Hard Dice or a Jot 8.5 Boogie Board. Both are great options and something that you can use at your next showdown to boot!

Step 3

Step 3 is to look over the new mechanics of Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Outlaws of Thunder Junction introduces the concept of crimes. Any spell or ability that targets an opponent, or their stuff (spells, permanents, hand, library) is committing a crime. Since this is a plane of outlaws, committing crimes is incentivized, not punished. In the villain set, you get to be the villain.

The set also introduces the plot mechanic. It’s similar to both foretell and suspend. When you pay a card’s plot cost, it goes into exile, and you can cast it on a later turn without paying its mana cost (as a sorcery). Plot can be used to hold cards up for explosive turns, but your hand’s on the table: opponents can see the plotted cards and plan around them.

Saddle is a keyword ability associated with the new Mount creature type. In a similar way to the Crew ability, it is activated by tapping any number of creatures you control with total power equal to or greater than the saddle value. Creatures with saddle, unlike Vehicles, can still attack and block like normal, but they have powerful abilities that only trigger when they become saddled or attack while saddled.

Finally, spree is a keyword found on instants and sorceries that grants them modality in a very similar way to escalate. Spells with spree have several effects, each with an additional cost. However, these costs can be different from each other. A spell with spree can have a very different impact when it’s cast in the early game using cheaper effects than when it’s cast as a finisher going all-out on expensive effects.

Step 4

Step 4 is to have fun! Prerelease events are casual fun events for all levels of players. They offer the first chance to learn and play with the new cards, and with a great community and fun environment, we can’t recommend attending these events enough.
